I am one of the first graduates of the Certified Digital Marketing Program of the Ateneo and IMMAP.  It took almost a year to finish all eleven modules.  A bit of trivia, the first two modules, Digital Wiki and Mobile Marketing were held at the Ateneo campus at Salcedo Village while the succeeding nine modules were done at the Rockwell campus.</div>

My classmates came from different industries and affiliation but most of them were marketing practitioners from ad agencies and private sector.  I felt like a duck wading in a different body of water.  My background is entrepreneurship with a BS Applied Economics degree from <i>the</i> other school.  I only know basic marketing so I had  a rather difficult time coping with my more experienced classmates.</div>

Another hurdle that I have to surmount was the age of my classmates.  At least 10% of them were young enough to be my children.  They were two to three years older than my own children!  But getting along with people from all walks of life and age for that matter is no brainer for me.  Years spent in sales and doing outreach in a Gawad Kalinga site paid off handsomely.  I am friends to all my batch mates and I think I have endeared myself to them as they to me.</div>

Several months passed and we were now at the tail end of the course.  I became more comfortable in tinkering with technology, of course, with a lot of help from my classmates and You Tube.  If I have to insert a widget or application et al, I have only myself to rely on and of course the internet.  There's no help coming from my children.  My daughter said that my getting adept with technology was a bad idea as I pose a fierce competitor to internet connection.</div>

After mastering the art of cramming (lol) and making marketing briefs,  I have gained friends among my classmates.  I am also proud to proclaim to all that I have four blogs tucked under my belt, <a href="http://theresmoneyingreen.blogspot.com/">There's Money in Green</a>, <a href="http://coolseptember.blogspot.com/">Cool September</a>, <a href="http://mylifeasacfc.blogspot.com/">My Life as a "Couples for Christ"</a> and <a href="http://marlajimenezrances.wordpress.com/">Bicol Express</a>, obviously a product of my CDM course and a subsequent one, Certified Blog Entrepreneur Program.  This course has also come in handy in conducting marketing initiatives for our family business.  As a bonus, my name can now be found in the search engines.</div>

It's called the "new tri-media".  This new triumvirate focuses on digital channels leaving behind TV, radio and print in a somewhat jurrasic limbo.  Digital strategists and planners are very much adept with the inherent power of mobile and the internet, but are they well versed with digital signage and digital place-based media?  Well, some haven't even heard of it yet.  And this is the reason why any good digital agency worth their salt should send their team to the 2nd Philippine Forum on Digital Out-Of-Home Media.  This takes place next Friday, July 15, 2011 at the AIM Conference Center in Makati from 8am to 12 noon.<br /><br />Digital OOH Media/Digital signage is the least studied among the three channels in the new tri-media.  This in fact will soon be the most dynamic among the three as it moves towards the type of audience engagement shown in the 2003 movie, "Minority Report".<br /><br />Our reco to digital strategists, Don't Get Left Behind!  Most of the spectacular digital campaigns worldwide had a digital out-of-home media component. Five things you need to know about SNS in China

<h2 class="article-intro-text"><span style="font-size:100%;">As a relative newcomer to China’s digital  landscape, Scarlett Lok, head of digital at TBWA Tequila Shanghai,  shares some of her learnings and observations on China’s social media  landscape versus the global, and more specifically the US, social media  landscape. </span></h2><br /><div id="article-text">                     <p><strong>1. For every one global social network site, there is an equivalent </strong>(and most likely a few copies) <strong>in China.</strong> Below are some comparisons of global or US social networks vs. China:</p> <ul><li>Facebook and MySpace - China has Renren, Kaixin, QQ, 51.com and Douban</li><li>YouTube - China has YouKu, Tudou, 56.com</li><li>Twitter - China has Weibo, Baidu, QQ</li><li>Foursquare - China has Jiepang</li></ul> <p><strong>2. User user interface (UI) and/ or experience is a whole new ball game in China.</strong>  Although most of China's social networking sites are copies of their  western counterparts, the UI seems to be lost in translation. There  seems to be an adverse feeling towards 'white space' on Chinese web  pages. If you surf the web in China, you will see what I mean.</p> <p><strong>3. Analytics is a luxury. </strong>All reported web  statistics should be taken with a grain of salt. There are limited and/  or no neutral third-party research firms or tools that provides  statistics for most of the SNS sites. Most SNS sites don't have open  APIs, hence all user profile information is self-reported. In addition,  most SNS sites have what they call 'site ambassadors'. For example, if a  brand is short on 'fans' for a campaign, no worries. You can employ  these site ambassadors to help recruit or boost your numbers.</p> <p><strong>4. A greater need for quality of content on the web.</strong>  In China, everyone is tweeting, but technically it should be  'weiboing'. According to NPR, there are over 30 million bloggers in  China. I also recently read a statistic that states that almost 90 per  cent of online users in China are registered to at least one BBS site.  Therefore, as a marketer and as a brand, quality versus quantity is even  more critical. Providing the right content in the right context in this  massively noisy space is essential to a brand's success.</p> <p><strong>5. Be open-minded and be prepared to learn something new everyday.</strong>  Be bold, try and test new things, but do be disciplined in your  approach. Given that best practices are lacking in China, you should use  what you've learned from more developed markets as a foundation – a  guide to help you set the framework. Then, get ready to adjust your  plans. This is China, after all. And this is digital – everything is  changing and at sonic speed. This month, the hottest thing is Weibo, but  by next month, who knows what will be the next 'it' thing. A framework  is important, but flexibility is key.</p>                 </div>
